**3.5 "I really like John Grey" kind of stars **
Who would ever thought that John can solve mysteries like no one else?
We first met John in Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander#2) and get more acquaintance with him in Voyager, and I got to say that from the start I thought he was quite a fascinating character. So while I wait for the next book of the Outlander series, what's best than spend some time with John?
Lord John gets involved in 2 situations, one is on personal grounds, regarding his cousin Olivia fiance, when he by accident see that fiance have the pox ( aka the distinct mark of syphilis), so it's understanding that he would try to figure it out if said fiance really have it.
The other matter, goes along with spies and treason, where he is in charge to investigate a murder of man, that by all accounts was suspected of betraying his country.
Alongside this two mysteries, that may or not be connected, we have a chance to immerse in a sort of 18th century England underground, since his investigations will lead him to the notorious Lavender House and even transvestites. We know our dear John is gay but we soon realize his necessity of covering that fact, or the lengths he takes to not put himself in those situations, at least not anymore.
Do not forget, he wouldn't only risk his reputation, the position of his family, his military career but also his freedom.
So overall, it was quite an interesting story, I do love a good mystery. And John is quite a kick ass and honorable hero, in my opinion.
