Manga Classics: Pride & Prejudice

Manga Classics: Pride & Prejudice

Rating : 4 stars
Read: July 2014
Format Read : ebook (ARC kindly given via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review)

It's been awhile since I read a manga but when I saw there was an adaptation of one of my all time favorite novels, I knew I had to read it.
And oh boy, it was FUN!!

Like every adaptation, this manga gets the essence of the story but it's not 100% faithful to the novel, there are only small adjustments to it, necessary due to the length of the manga.

How about the drawings?
So lovely!!!

Darcy is gorgeous and all awkward, haha. And there are some scenes that I couldn't help but laugh of how flustered he got. Let's just say that the scene he realized Lizzy was beautiful was kind of priceless.
I was surprise of how attractive Mr Bennett looked really, and Mrs Bennett was so darn cute (her chibi drawings were the best, although "evil" Chibi Darcy won all the awards!!).
But the most hilarious character was in fact Mr Collins, I couldn't stop laughing at it.

The only downside in this reading was really the format, I know manga books are backwards but they could have change the ebook was annoying how I did had to keep scrolling up and down, not practical at all.

Anyway, this was a lovely manga that made me want to read more manga and of course, re-read Pride and Prejudice.

Jo Confessions #1 || Let's talk about book adaptations

Hi everyone,

I decided to make a new segment on the blog, this time to share with you guys some of my thoughts in several themes.
The 1st (and most definitely not the only) post is about book adaptations.

Sorry, just couldn't resist.
Anyway,it's fair to say, if you love a book, you'll dream and dread to see him in the big or small screen.
For my experience the book is always better than the movie but still, there are several good and even GREAT adaptations out there.
In the other hand there are pretty awful adaptions, that butchered so much the original that you almost don't recognize it.
Here is the thing, I don't expect a movie to be 100% faithful to a book although I do expect more from a TV series since it does have a lot more time to explore the whole book in not only the highlight moments. I'm not picky, I do understand many things must be adapted and it's hard to show to a larger audience, what each one of us pictured in our heads and heart. How I imagined one character must look like it's not necessarily how you view it, of course the major traits must be the same but the nuances that make that character real are different.
So yeah, I'm not that picky but still, adaptations can PISS ME OFF!!

But in this first post I'll focus in the upcoming book adaption I can't freakin wait to watch! I'm over excited about it...can you guess?
If you have been following my reviews you probably guessed it, yes it's OUTLANDER!!!!!

5 Things Outlander Fans Need to Know About the Show

And this video, which I lost count how many times I watched!

Sam is the perfect Jamie ♥ Oh and you're welcome lassies.

I had the 1st book on my nightstand several months before I started reading it, it was the 1st pics released of the TV show that made me dive in and I'm still immersed in the whole Outlander world.
This series have become one of my favorites of ALL TIME, it's epic, mesmerizing, riveting, emotional, complex and you see, how much I'm anticipating this adaptation.
So far, for what I've seen of footage and interviews, they have being paying attention to details but much more, how to put these beloved novels into the screen. Scenes may be added and other cuts, but if the essence of the story and most of all, of the characters it's there, I'm happy.
Hopefully it won't turn out like Game of Thrones, that despite being a show I still love is becoming more and more stray from the books...from killing characters that aren't still dead in the books, from changing pivotal scenes and make them a distortion of the original scene and worse, that character arc.

But yeah, I do have really high hopes for Outlander!

This is my reaction to all things related to the Outlander series!
Meanwhile, I got to keep reading because this books are so damn good.

In the next post about book adaptation, I'll talk about some upcoming ones, my favorites and some that made me oh so angry.

Are you anticipating any book adaptation?
Or which ones did you loved or hated?

Someone to Watch over Me (Bow Street Runners #1)

Someone to Watch over Me

Rating : 4 stars
Read: June 2014
Format Read : Kindle Edition

"I think the truth is something you recognize with your heart,
even when the evidence seems to prove otherwise"

Grant Morgan is one of the most famous and respected of the Bow Street Runners, he is many times the first one to arrive at the crime scene or to apprehend suspects. One he goes to see a corpse in the Thames river, he is astonished to recognize the woman, Vivien Duvall, one of the most notorious courtesans of London...and even more astonished when he realizes she is still alive.
He takes her to his home and under his protection, but not only does he want to catch the culprit, he wants revenge towards Vivien, because she spread false rumors about him.
But it seems she doesn't have any recall of who she is, and more Grant tells her about her life, the more she feels torned because it couldn't be true.
And well, the more Grant is in her company, the more he sees the difference between the shallow and superficial woman he met, and the lovely and vulnerable woman he sees now.
Can he love her even with her past? Can he uncover who tried to kill her?

In several parts of the books I had mixed up feelings about Grant...he was brave, valiant but the I couldn't believe his first plan of vendetta, because she tried to ruin his reputation. No matter if she was a courtesan or not, she was extremely vulnerable, not knowing who she was. I got to say, that just towards the end I warmed up towards him and finally thought he had swoon worthy material.
And well the chemistry and the hot scenes between them? So damn good!

Anyway, this is a Kleypas book so I knew I was bound to enjoy it and like it, even if the plot had some really predictable parts [ from the very beginning I shouted twins, lol .

Every Day (Every Day #1)

Every Day

Rating : 4.5 stars
Read: June 2014
Format Read : Kindle Edition

This is what love does: It makes you want to rewrite the world.
It makes you want to choose the characters, build the scenery, guide the plot.
The person you love sits across from you, and you want to do everything in your power to make it possible, endlessly possible.

This is A's story, every day he wakes in a different body, a different gender, race, a different life.

Since he could remember, A's always "hijacked" another person body, another person life. How crippling it would be to exist but in a way not having an identity of his own.
A's tries his best not to disrupt the life of the person he is in,trying to not act differently, try to remain unnoticed...until the day he fells in love with a girl, Rhiannon.
Now he cares where/who will be, he must try to know more about her, be with her, because he never felt such a connection since the day he met her.

Can a person that changes every day, have a chance of continuity, of belonging?

Gosh, I really got so emotional reading this unique story.
More than a love story, it's a story of a person craving for belonging, to a shot of existence, to an opportunity to be remember. He could never had a family, friends to call his own, since he never knew where or who he will be in the next day. It's actually a heartbreaking story, because even if you root for A, we can't see how he can get what he really wants.

Now, I see that this is one of those books that aren't for everyone but it worked really well for me.
I loved the writing and the story was really one of a kind. A story that it's beyond gender, race, body type...a story that shows that each one of us just wants to belong and find someone to call our own.

Secret (Elemental #4)

Secret (Elemental, #4)

Rating :5 stars
Read: July 2014
Format Read : Kindle Edition - ARC kindly given via Netgalley

“You're so damn worried about what everyone else wants. Well, you know what, Nick? You're going to disappoint people sometimes. You just are. And you know what else?
They're either going to get over it or they're not.
If they don't, it sucks.
But it's not going to kill them, and it's sure not going to kill you.”

Nick is the dependable guy, the responsible one, the one from all his brothers that do no wrong, that isn't reckless, that always do things by the book.

And Nick, doesn't want to disappoint anyone, so he bears it all, he tries to keep his grades high, he tries to help Michael in the business...but still, he can't open the letters from all the colleges? What if they rejected him? Worse, what if they accepted him and he would leave all his brothers behind? Who would help with business and keep things afloat?

But Nick is reaching a breaking point, because above all he have a secret he can't share with his brothers. He is afraid they will cast him aside, treat him differently if they discover he is gay and that he is in love with Adam, Quinn's dancing partner.
Adding that, the threats at his family continues, they still have a target at their head. And to add, Quinn's started hanging out with his enemy, Tyler?

It's just a matter a time until Nick reaches that point of no return...

It was so good!

It's been almost a year since I read the other books in the series but the moment I picked up this one, it seems it haven't passed any time at all. The characters were still familiar and real, and from page one I was already immersed in their world.

Nick, my poor Nick...

Gosh, I got so emotional with his struggle. He is one of those characters that put everything inside, that put the interests of other above his own. It was time to start living and put himself first too.

And his relationship with Adam? They are 2 cutie pies and I just wanted to hug them. They could be vulnerable and honest with each other and also, have insanely chemistry together. I especially love how Nick felt every time he sees Adam dance *sigh
I like Quinn, even if there were times that I couldn't get some of her actions but then I would realize, that people cope at their own way at their problems. With a family like that, no wonder she always looked love in the wrong places.

Now, one of the biggest surprises for me, was Tyler, the nemesis of the Merrick's.I actually thought he could be quite sweet and lovable, and I couldn't believe it. I kept chanting "I can't like Tyler" but well, at the end of this book, I did warmed up a little towards him. He still have a lot to change but now he can see why he acted that way(not that justifies what he did, but still).

So overall, this was another great book in this series.

Bedding the Wrong Brother (Dalton Brothers #1)

Bedding the Wrong Brother (Dalton Brothers, #1)

Rating :4 stars
Read: July 2014
Format Read : Kindle Edition

So last night I was looking for what to read next, and I picked this one a bit randomly on my Kindle.
And oh boy did it was a pleasant surprise! I was immediately hooked in the story and ended up reading it in one setting.
Oh my, so much glorious angst! I know, I must be such a masochist reader but I can't help but be drawn to stories like this...unrequited love, love someone behind close doors, well maybe I'm just projecting and seeing to much of myself in these stories.

Anyway, this is Melina story and how she decided to do something to not be awful in bed. Now, why does she thinks that? Her jerk and douchebag ex, told her she was like a stiff board beneath him, no passion *feels infuriated*
So one night, talking with her friends, and with alcohol in the mix, it was settled she was in need for some lessons. She is a women of science, and she does know that practice makes perfect, aha.
And well she could only ask something like that to Max, her childhood friend. She couldn't ask Rhys, Max's twin, since she have loved him her whole life.

This is the thing, since she loved Rhys, she always felt awkward and uncomfortable around him (while at the same time, glowing for being near him), because she thought no way he could love her back, and so no way he could know she loved him. So with Max, she was always at ease, laughing and teasing him.
What she didn't know was that Rhys loved her too, and pained to see how she behaved differently when she was with him and when she was with Max.
Are you feeling the angst now? Gosh, and it only gets worse, when some misunderstandings go between them and they drift apart.

So Max, know exactly how these two feels about each other, so he arranges a case of "mistaken identity" you see where this is going? :D

Now the next morning, when Melina realizes, it was not a vivid fantasy and that she had spent the night with Rhys, her first reaction is to flee but not that Rhys had finally been with her, he won't let go that easy. He have a weekend to continue his lessons and secretly wishing he can have her in his life.

The perfect blend of sweet, angst, hotness and love! I just loved this story.
It had great characters, with such different jobs (he is a magician and she is an entomologist) but still quite right for each other, not without compromising of both parts.
Now I do want to read Max's story! :)

The Golden Key Chronicles (The Golden Key Chronicles #1-4)

The Golden Key Chronicles (The Golden Key Chronicles #1- #4)

Rating :4 stars
Read: July 2014
Format Read : Kindle Edition (ARC kindly given via Netgalley)

Rowena is an antique dealer and she just purchased an's quite in bad conditions, but when she starts exploring the armoire she finds a hidden key and what it seems a "magic" mirror. In the other side of the mirror she sees an handsome warrior, that thinks she is a sorceress, destined to bring the key to save his people. Now Rowena at first, thinks this is a prank by her friend Oliver but she soon realizes, that was seems impossible it's actually true.

But the more she speaks with the handsome prince Caedmon, the more the bound between them grows. They speak for hours and share some things they never told anyone before.
And then comes the time where she must make the choice, to leave her world, risk everything to be with him and save his people.
But the moment she gives the key she looses her memory and Caedmon must leave her to try to find the chest, held in the enemy kingdom.
And 2 years later, Caedmon returns after being held and tortured, only to find his love have passed to hardships and still doesn't remember him.

Three days with him and she'd risked everything? Given up her entire life?
NO,no, people didn't experience the kind of love he described after only three days.

They couldn't.
Not unless they were completely insane!
Can he remind her of her love? Can he find the traitor behind the trap where he was caught? Can they fulfill their destiny and save them all?

I enjoyed a lot this epic fantasy, it had a good plot and quite awesome characters.

I loved Rowena and how much she grow in those 2 years, she became a fierce warrior in her own right. Yep, quite a kick ass heroine. The scene where she makes her test to prove her value as a warrior and to gain her freedom, was wicked.
And Caedmon? Quite the perfect hero! Brave, resilient and above all, devoted to her! I loved when at one point, when he thought he couldn't be with her, he would still help her to be safe, even if it meant away from him.
The world building was great, I loved how history was matched with legends and myths, and how the passage through the realms was possible.
And that alongside the love of this 2, made this story a good read.

Honor loved Brogan has long she could remember. They were best friends and along the way she gave her heart to him, without him knowing it that.

We can say that they were friends with benefits but Honor always craved for more, always hoped for more. So when she sees her biological clock ticking, she decides it's time to take a leap and confess it all. Unfortunately she get's rejected and despite he is kind of a nice guy, he used the WORST METAPHOR EVER! THE WORST!

Seriously, i wanted to punch him in the face.

Anyway, Honor is licking her wounds and try to move on ,only to be "hit" again a few weeks later with the announcement that Brogan is engaged to her best friend?
Are you saing...WHAAAATTT? Yes, I did that too. What a B**ch!!
Now most definitely she need to move on with her life, and stop wasting time moping around who she thought was "Mr Perfect".

So cue to Tom Barlow, a gorgeous and Oh so charming British professor...he is a mechanical engineer, so smart, handy and handsome, a winning combination indeed!

(You're welcome for the visual,aha)

He is trying to get along with his unofficial stepson, Charlie, but it gets harder every time. Charlie is an angry teen and every single time Tom tries to reach him, Charlie shut him down.
And now Tom's visa is expiring, and he must find a way to staying the States and be there for Charlie. He must get a green card.

And that's how Honor and Charlie path's cross, and she decides to help him out and agrees to marry him.
But the more they know each other, the more they connect, the more they feel to each other...and little by little what started has a pretense can become so much more!

I did loved this book, especially Honor and Tom! Great and strong characters, with great chemistry with each other. And how I rooted for this 2 to get a HEA.

If you're looking for a lovely and yet emotional romance, add it to your TBR list. :)
