The Montgomerys and Armstrongs are feuding clans for over 50 years. No one know what it started but over the years , the casualties between the 2 clans, made the hate to grow deep and strong.
So when the thing decides is time to join the 2 of them, through marriage, everyone sees it as a punishment. The Montgomery's laird Graeme must wed the Armstrong's laird daughter, Eveline.
For Graeme, even worse than marrying the enemy is to wed a daft/touched woman, because it meant he would never be able to gain heirs.
Everyone thinks that Eveline is touched, after an accident 3 years ago. But the true is that she had become deaf. So to avoid a terrible wedding to a cruel man, she lets everyone believe that she is touched.
And well, she doesn't speak because she is afraid, she can control her voice, how loud our low her voice is. Still, she can "hear" some sounds, feels their vibration.
When Eveline met Graeme she is drawn to him, because she can feel his voice and finds herself content to marry him.
And Graeme? He is drawn to her and it seems they somehow can communicate with each other. But he feels guilty that he is attracted to a woman that can't comprehend it.
And they start to have feelings for each other...
"If anyone had ever told him he'd feel so strongly about protecting someone named Armstrong, he would have laughed in their face. And yet he sat with Travis Armstrong's daughter, knowing that he'd do anything at all to ensure her happiness. "
This book was just BEAUTIFUL!!!
Loved it to pieces.
I LOVE HIM!!!!
The way he didn't left ancient grudges cloud his opinion of Eveline.
From the start it was a beauty to see how they communicate with each other.
One of the most amazing things for me that in this book, the hero was the first to acknowledge his love. And wasn't afraid of it, he told her especially with his actions that she means the world to him.
"I love you Eveline," he whispered, though he knew she could not hear him. "Somehow, I'll make you hear me and you'll know that I love you as fiercely as it's possible for a man to love a woman."
Such a strong character!
When you read this, it's impossible not to like her.
It's amazing to see how she could overcome her limitations, by teaching herself how to read lips. And how brave she is to go live in a clan that despise her only because of her name. You'll root for her and for Graem to be happy and to overcome all the hardships.
Oh and don't let me start on their love, it was B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L.
Perhaps one day ... She sighed wistfully. Perhaps one day she would even gain his love. Oh to be able to hear those words. Really hear them. The idea sent an ache straight to her heart that nearly over powered her.
And just let me say that the ending was PERFECT and SO EMOTIONAL. I was crying and laughing and feeling all that love.
If you fan of historical romances you MUST read this one! His just brilliant!
And well this was my first Maya's Banks book but I can guarantee it won't be my last.
